In the recent past, governments have been investing all their resources to ensure that consumers use environmentally friendly equipment. The faucet aerator have not been exempted from this campaign. This is evident in the United States where the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency introduced a program called WaterSense. This program aims at protecting the future of the America’s water supply by introducing ways that can enable people to use less water. It is for this reason that most homeowners are encouraged to replace the old faucet aerators with the WaterSense approved aerators.
Normally, the kitchen and bathroom sinks faucets consumer about 17% of the amount of water used in homes. It is for this reason that the Federal Plumbing Standards had to be designed to regulate water use through aerators. One good thing with the two types of facets is that one can save up to 40% of the water that is being used in these two areas.

The kitchen and bath faucet aerators are available in a number of configurations depending on an individual’s needs. For example, the bubble tap aerators are commonly used in both kitchen and bathrooms. This is due the fact that, they can add air to the water making it have a sensation of larger flow even when there is a low volume of water within the system. They are equipped with different types of mesh that act as a flow restrictor.
The needle spray aerators have also gained popularity in kitchen and bathroom applications. This is due to their ability to compensate pressure. This compensates for the fluctuations in pressure, which may exist within the piping systems due to the main supply. Moreover, they are the only aerators that can be designed to have ultra-low flow.
The main difference between the bathroom and kitchen tap system is the amount of water which is used in the environments. In the United States of America, before 1994; a number of faucets were designed to deliver between 2.75 and 7.0 gallons per minute. According to the Federal Plumbing Standards, all bathroom faucets should be fitted with aerators that use no more than 2.2 gallons per minute. On the other hand, the kitchen faucets should be fitted with aerators that can deliver no more than 2.5 gallons per minute. This has been a major milestone in ensuring that people realize cost saving when it comes to the use of water.

Plumbers and homeowners are expected to use the WaterSense certified aerators. They are the recognized water-efficient aerators. Depending on aerators alone may not be enough Thus, households are advised to adopt various water conservation tips such as:
- Turning off the faucet while brushing or doing other activities within the bathroom apart from bathing.
- It is advisable to fill the sink with water while washing utensils by hand rather than letting the faucet run while washing the dishes.
- All leaking faucets should be fixed since this can lead to over 3,000 gallons being wasted every year, depending on the quantity of water that drips from the tap.
